Sinaloa Middle School HVAC and Roof Upgrade
Novato, CA
2025
Over the summer of 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to serve as the Project Manager for the Sinaloa Middle School HVAC and Roof Upgrade. This was a full-scale infrastructure project focused on modernizing the campus's core systems to ensure a comfortable and functional learning environment for students and staff.
My role was comprehensive: I was responsible for directing this project from the initial design phase all the way through construction completion, essentially taking it from 0% to 100% with a high degree of independence.
The primary challenge was not just the replacement itself, but the strategic relocation of heavy machinery. We were tasked with replacing the outdated built-up roof with a modern TPO roofing system and replacing all existing rooftop HVAC units.
The demanding part was getting those units onto the ground. This required significant design work for the new units and the concrete pads they would sit on. My focus was on placement strategy: I had to meticulously design the location of these new ground-level pads to ensure they provided adequate support while critically avoiding any interruption to the existing paths of travel on the campus. Strategic placement was key to maintaining campus accessibility and safety.
The final outcome had a direct and positive impact on the entire school community:
Infrastructure Modernization: We successfully installed fully renovated, modern TPO roofs on all campus buildings.
Enhanced Learning Environment: A completely new HVAC system was implemented across the campus, providing air conditioning to classrooms—including rooms that previously had none. Teachers were incredibly grateful to begin the Fall 2025 semester with climate control.
Cost Savings & Compliance: Crucially, I managed the entire scope of work without triggering non-voluntary access upgrades (e.g., ADA-related mandates). By executing the design and construction strategically, we helped the school district realize significant cost savings by avoiding a large scope of unplanned work.
I consider this project a major milestone in my development. My most valuable skill gained was the ability to successfully direct a complex project from inception to completion with a high degree of autonomy.
While I consulted with the principal architect for critical assistance, the day-to-day management, problem-solving, and design coordination were my responsibility. Successfully navigating the design and construction phases with no major, unresolvable roadblocks solidified my confidence as a Project Manager and proved my capability to lead projects independently.
